“You are the God who sees me.” — Genesis 16:13

In a world filled with injustice, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the prevalence of evil. Corruption, oppression, and cruelty seem to dominate the headlines, while the innocent suffer in silence. At times, it appears as though wickedness goes unchecked, and those who commit grave injustices escape without consequence. In moments like these, we may find ourselves asking, Will it ever end? The weight of such thoughts can lead to despair, making us question whether justice will ever be served. However, as believers, we can find comfort in the unshakable truth that God is a God who sees.

The story of Hagar in the Bible beautifully illustrates this truth. Hagar was a servant in the household of Abram and Sarai, caught in a situation beyond her control. When Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled into the wilderness, likely feeling abandoned, unseen, and without hope (Genesis 16:6). Yet, in that desolate place, You, O Lord, appeared to her. You called her by name and acknowledged her suffering. In awe and gratitude, Hagar gave You a name that would be remembered throughout history: El Roi, “the God who sees.” She declared, “Truly here I have seen Him who looks after me” (Genesis 16:13, ESV).

What a powerful reminder that no injustice escapes God’s notice. The same God who saw Hagar sees us today. He sees every wrong, every injustice, and every tear shed in secret. He is not indifferent to our suffering. Instead, He is a just and holy God who cares deeply for His people. The world may seem chaotic, and justice may feel delayed, but Scripture assures us that God’s judgment will come in His perfect timing. As Psalm 37:28 declares, “For the Lord loves justice; He will not forsake His saints.”

Therefore, even when it feels like wickedness prevails, we can find peace in knowing that God sees. He is not only aware but actively involved in our lives. Just as He intervened in Hagar’s distress, He watches over us, guiding, protecting, and ultimately bringing justice. His righteousness cannot be thwarted, and His love for His children is unwavering.

Let us take heart in this truth. Though injustice may seem overwhelming, God remains sovereign. He is El Roi, the God who sees, and He will not abandon His people. We can rest in His justice, trust in His goodness, and praise Him for His unfailing care.
